This Privacy Policy explains how JBK Outdoors (Pty) Ltd (“JBK Outdoors”, “we”, “us” or “our”) collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information when you use our website, book our activities, or buy products from us. We handle personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (“POPIA”).
This policy works together with our Terms & Conditions.
1. Who is responsible for your information
JBK Outdoors (Pty) Ltd is the “responsible party” for your personal information.
Information Officer: The Managing Director of JBK Outdoors
Address: 60 Pioneer Road, Kraaifontein, Cape Town, Western Cape, 7570, South Africa
Email: info@jbkoutdoors.com
Phone: +27 (0)21 879 2380
2. What information we collect
Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect:
- Contact and booking details – your name, email address, phone number, and the details of your booking.
- Participant details – the names and ages of the people attending an activity, including children in your group.
- Health and safety details – any medical conditions, allergies, dietary needs or swimming ability you tell us about so we can keep participants safe. This is sensitive information and we only use it for that purpose.
- Payment information – payments are processed by our payment partners (such as Payfast, PayPal and the card networks). We receive confirmation of payment but we do not store your full card details.
- Photographs and video – images taken at our activities (see section 6).
- Website information – basic technical data such as your device, browser and how you use our site, collected through cookies and similar tools (see section 8).
- Messages – any information you send us by email, contact form, reviews or social media.
3. How we collect your information
We collect information directly from you when you make a booking, buy a product, create an account, fill in a form, contact us, or attend one of our activities. We also collect some website information automatically through cookies. Where you give us information about other people in your group (including children), you confirm that you are allowed to share it with us for the purposes set out in this policy.
4. Why we use your information
We use your personal information to:
- Process and manage your bookings and product orders, and take payment.
- Keep participants safe and respond to medical, dietary or accessibility needs.
- Communicate with you about your booking, including confirmations and changes.
- Provide customer support and handle returns, refunds or complaints.
- Run, secure and improve our website and Booking Engine.
- Send you marketing about JBK Outdoors and the Catch Club, where you have agreed to receive it (see section 7).
- Meet our legal, accounting and tax obligations.
We rely on your consent, the need to perform our contract with you, our legitimate business interests, and our legal obligations as the lawful basis for using your information.
5. Children’s information
Many of our activities involve children, and POPIA gives children’s personal information special protection. We collect a child’s information (such as name, age and any safety-related needs) from the parent, guardian or responsible adult who makes the booking, and we use it only to run the activity safely. We will not use a child’s identifiable images or information for marketing without the consent of their parent or guardian. A parent or guardian may ask us to access, correct or delete their child’s information at any time.
6. Photographs and video
We sometimes take photographs or video at our activities to record the day and to promote JBK Outdoors and the Catch Club, including on our website and social media. We rely on your consent to use images in which you or your child are identifiable. You can ask us not to photograph a participant, or to remove or stop using an image, at any time by emailing info@jbkoutdoors.com, or by letting our staff know on the day.
7. Marketing and your choices
We will only send you marketing messages (such as newsletters or special offers) where you have agreed to receive them, or where the law otherwise allows it. You can opt out at any time by clicking “unsubscribe” in any marketing email, or by emailing us at info@jbkoutdoors.com. Opting out of marketing does not stop us sending you important messages about a booking you have made.
8. Cookies and website data
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, remember your preferences, keep your booking and cart functioning, and understand how the site is used so we can improve it. You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, although some parts of the site may not work properly without them.
9. Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only where necessary, with:
- Payment providers who process your payments securely (such as Payfast, PayPal and card networks).
- Service providers who help us run our business — for example, our website hosting, Booking Engine, email and IT providers. They may only use your information to provide their service to us.
- Professional advisors such as our accountant, where needed for our legal and financial obligations.
- Authorities or third parties where we are required to by law, or to protect the safety and rights of people at our activities.
10. Where your information is stored
Our website and information are hosted in South Africa. Some of our service providers (for example, email or analytics tools) may process information on servers outside South Africa. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is protected by a comparable level of security and in line with POPIA.
11. How we keep your information secure
We take reasonable and appropriate technical and organisational steps to protect your personal information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No system can be guaranteed to be completely secure, but we work to keep your information safe and to act quickly if a problem occurs.
12. How long we keep your information
We keep your personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes set out in this policy, or for as long as the law requires (for example, financial records that must be kept for tax purposes). When we no longer need it, we securely delete or anonymise it.
13. Your rights under POPIA
You have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you, and request a copy of it.
- Ask us to correct or update information that is wrong or out of date.
- Ask us to delete information we no longer have a lawful reason to keep.
- Object to us using your information for certain purposes, including direct marketing.
- Withdraw any consent you have given (this will not affect anything we did before you withdrew it).
- Complain to us, or to the Information Regulator, about how we handle your information.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@jbkoutdoors.com. We may need to confirm your identity before we act on your request.
14. Complaints to the Information Regulator
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa):
